Best Family Sailing Destinations New destination

Every year hundreds of families come sailing with us, many for the first time, but also many that are regular sailors. From there feedback, mixed in with a bit of our own experience and knowledge, we've come up with our list of the best sailing areas in the Med for families.

1. Dalmatian Islands

What makes a good family sailing holiday destination? We believe the answer is shorter sailing legs, plenty of variety in the mooring locations, winds that aren’t too challenging, warm, clear waters and plenty to do, see and explore on land. In short – The Dalmatian Islands.

There are even more benefits for families considering sailing in Croatia – the flights and transfers are relatively short, and also the temperatures during July and August are a ‘mild’ 30 degrees Celsius, which contrasts rather nicely to temperatures in Turkey that can reach over 40 degrees!

With the Dalmatian Islands being voted the best overall sailing destination in the Mediterranean, needless to say it is a glorious place to visit and sail. We recommend it everyone, including parents who have more than themselves to consider.

2. Saronic Islands

The Saronic Islands also share the characteristics that make it a very good family sailing area; short sailing legs, plenty to do and see, great weather and beautiful waters. With slightly more wind than the Dalmatian Islands on average, the Saronics are best suited to families that enjoy having a bit of a sail.

The Saronics are also further south than Croatia, so are also a better bet for families looking to go earlier or later in the season (May or October in particular). Between May and October you can reasonably expect the weather to be hot and sunny.

3. Ionian Islands

The Ionian Islands in Greece are widely regarded as being the ’least windy’ destination anywhere in the Mediterranean, so if you’re looking for a sailing holiday that is all about the ‘holiday’ rather than the ‘sailing’, then the Ionian is for you!

The idyllic Ionian is a truly glorious sailing destination, set in the greenest part of Greece, there are a multitude of bays, ports, harbours and villages for you to visit within a short hop, skip and a jump from each other.

The Greek people offer a warm welcome that the whole family will be sure to love.
