~ Wind and Weather in the Saronic Islands Sailing The Saronic Islands
The best point of reference on our multi coloured animated map is Crete, which is the large island at the bottom of the map, if you were to draw a line straight up from the left of Crete the first bay that you hit is the Saronic Gulf – the little islands are the Saronic Islands.
The map above is taken from a week in August, which is typically the windiest period in the Saronic Gulf. The direction of the wind does largely depend on which area you’re sailing, as the sailing ground between Methana and the mainland coast the prevailing wind is the meltemi blowing a force 4 to 6 from a NNE – NE direction, which dies off around sunset.
However if sailing the Argolic Gulf (just around the corner to the left of the Saronic Gulf) and the gulf of Hydra the prevailing wind is the Bouka Doura, which blows from a SE direction at around a force 3 to 5 picking up at midday and tailing off come night fall.
Further south than the Ionian Islands, the Saronic and Argolic Gulf have a slightly longer season as they enjoy a mild climate in the winter and into the 30’s in the height of summer which combined with great sailing make it ideal for those sailors amongst you who want to try a new sailing ground.
Beaufort Wind Scale descriptions:
Force 1 to 3 - light winds
Force 4 - moderate winds
Force 5 - fresh winds
Force 6 – strong winds
