~ Wind and Weather in the Ionian Islands Sailing The Ionian Islands
In the Ionian there is the Island of Corfu, in the north Ionian and Lefkada which is towards the south Ionian. A good point of reference on our multi coloured map is Crete which is at the bottom of the map, if you draw a line from the left of Crete behind the Pelopnesse you’ll find yourself heading towards the Ionian Islands past Zakynthos and up toward Lefkada and Corfu.
The animated snap shot above shows a typical week in August in the whole Ionian and that it has a light wind in the morning, picking up in the afternoon for a pleasant afternoon sail in the region of a beaufort force 2 to 5 and dropping again at sunset. In the summer months the winds are pretty consistent apart from sometimes in July and August when a wind called the Maistro may blow through from a NW direction, it is a little stronger than the normal NW wind.
As a whole the Ionian is a great destination to head to for beginner sailors, those finding their feet or just for those who enjoy light winds, short hop sails and great sunny weather in the summer months – with temperatures reaching 32 degrees in July and August.
Beaufort wind scale descriptions:
Force 1 to 3 – light winds
Force 4 – moderate winds
Force 5 – fresh winds
