~ Wind and Weather in the Sporades Sailing The Sporades Islands
The best point of reference on our multi coloured animated map is Crete which is the large island located at the bottom of the map. If you were to draw a line from the far left of Crete the second group of islands you will come to are the northern Sporades, which includes Skiathos amongst others.
The snapshot above is taken from a week in August which is typically the windiest period, as this is when the Meltemi is in full swing. As you will be able to see the winds around the northern Sporades range from an average force 4 to a force 6 the further south into the Sporades that you sail.
Generally the wind blows from a NNE direction in the Sporades, although the direction can be altered as it channels through the islands. On the lee side of the islands there are flat seas, which combined with wind make for an exhilarating sail.
In the height of summer you can expect average temperatures of 26 degrees, with July and August being the hottest months.
Beaufort Wind Scale descriptions:
Force 1 to 3 - light winds
Force 4 - moderate winds
Force 5 - fresh winds
Force 6 – strong winds
