Skiathos
The closest island to the mainland, Skiathos is often referred to as 'TheGreek Riviere' and is extremely green, due to the large pine forests that cover the island. Wonderful long and golden sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters make Skiathos a popular tourist destination in the summer. The marina is on the South East of the island in Skiathos town, where the airport is also located, making the transfer to your yacht short and simple. Like any popular tourist destination, all amenities and provisions are available on the island, as well as a variety of activities from horse riding to aqua theme parks. The island has an extensive night life with a large variety of bars, tavernas and even some night clubs for those looking to let there hair down. All in all skiathos has everything you could need to start and finish your sailing holiday.
Skopelos
The island next to Skiathos, Skopelos is similarly green due to pine forests, but is also extremely fertile, and famed for its vines, olives, almonds, pears, citrus fruit and plums. Harbours can be found in Skopelos town on the North East coast and Loutraki on the West. There are also a couple of anchorages on the South West of the island. Like Skiathos, golden sandy beaches line the coast on Skopelos, attracting day visitors from Skiathos and the mainland in peak season. The island is well populated in the summer months and all provisions can be found in either harbour, as well as a good choice of tavernas and cafes.Alonissos
A hilly, wooded island which relies on the donkey and the Caique (small Greek fishing boats) as much as on motorised vehicles. The harbour, Patitiri, is located on the South of the island where provisions and a variety of tavernas and cafes can be found. The area is also a National Marine Park, established in 1992. The Park encompasses a monk seal rescue centre on Alonissos and an exclusion zone around Piperi islet. The park is an important habitat for endangered species of fish, birds, reptiles and mammals. These include Eleonora's Falcon, Audouin's gull, the wild goat of Yioura and many species of dolphin and whales, so keep a good lookout when sailing around Alonissos!Skyros
The most easterly of the northern Sporades, with a summit of over 2000 feet, Skyros is covered on the higher slopes with pine trees, and on the fertile land lower down, some parts are cultivated. The capital Skiro lies on the east coast, where an anchorage can be found in Achilles Bay in light winds. The west coast offers more shelter and a harbour at Linaria, but numerous anchorages surround the island, so you'll be spoilt for choice. White cubist houses with flat roofs are built on a steep slope with a Venetian castle on the summit, making Skiros a spectacularly picturesque place to spend some time. Tourism on the island ventured slightly away from the mainstream, with yoga workshops, and alternative medicine treatments among the relaxation techniques.Kyra Panagia
The island is part of the Alonissos National Marine Park and one of the few remaining habitats of the Mediterranean Monk seal. There was once talk of yachts being banned from the island but as yet nothing has come of such a proposal, but visiting yachtsmen should take the upmost care to avoid damaging the local environment. The island is deserted bar a variety of wildlife, and the west coast has a number of safe anchorages, making it a perfect spot to get away from it all in a peaceful, tranquil setting.Porto Koufos
Located on the most south west point of the Sithonia peninsula is a small fishing settlement of Sikia, known as Porto Koufo.
The story goes Porto Koufo got its name ‘Kofos Limin’ (Deaf Harbour) by an ancient Greek Historian - Thucydides because once inside the bay no seas sounds can be heard at all. Of all the harbours in Greece, Porto Koufo is the largest natural harbour found, it also sports an interesting history. Used not only by Turkish pirates, the Germans fortified the area during World War II as its it has direct access to the Agean Sea. Many of the fortifications can still be seen today.Kallithea
Home to the sanctuary of Dionysous and the Nymphs, Doric's sanctuary to Zeus Ammon, not to mention its golden sandy coastline fringed with green pines, Kallithea accomodates all its visitor.Palio Trikeri
Just North of the traditional village of Trikeri, situated at the entrance of Pagassitikos bay, is a small island known as Palio Trikeri. With access only by boat from Volos this small island is home to just 87 people. Its beaches and bays, with crystal clear waters, are ideal for those who want to relax away from the hustle and bustle of those larger tourist crowds found on the main island.
Orei
On the north side of the island Evia lies Orei,a small village with a picturesque port where you can enjoy fresh fish in the traditional tavernas. Boasting crystal clear waters, the beach of Orei is ideal for those who want to relax away from the crowds.Turkish and Venetian castles can still be found in Orei so taking a walk to explore these slices of history is a must!
Koukounaries
Situated on the southwest of Skiathos lies Koukounaries, one of the more famous beaches of the Sporades Islands. One mile of golden sand, azure waters backed by dense coniferous woods and a lagoon it is easy to see why it is loved by water sport enthusiasts and families alike. Koukounari derives its name from the Greek word 'pine cone' which becomes evident by the number of green pines found along the waterside. Behind this forest of pines lies the lagoon Strofilias, a protected area for migrating birds and wildlife. With its marina lying at the east of the beach it is here you will find peddle boats, banana boat rides, waterskiing and sailing on offer for those who want to get onto that crystal blue water!
