Sailing the Sporades Islands

From our small base in Skiathos you can sail the Sporades Islands, a beautiful archipelago in the north east of Greece. Skiathos is the westernmost island in this group, and is the most important island in the group due to its tourist appeal, its airport and of course, its yacht charter port.

This green, forested island boasts some of the best beaches in the Aegean with 68 white sand beaches gracing its shores. The Northern Sporades consists of 24 islands, only four of which are inhabited; Alonnisos, Skiathos, Skopelos, and Skyros.

While the beaches and town of Skiathos can be very busy in the summer period, the other islands are just as beautiful but have the added benefit of being rather unspoilt. In fact there are many beaches that are only accessible by boat, promising a fantastic time for those lucky enough to be on a Sporades sailing holiday. Look for these spots along the northern coast of Evia as well as inside the Pagassitikos Gulf (Volos) and the East coast of Thessaly mainland.

The Sporades Islands sailing area is one for more experienced sailors that enjoy not only clear waters and beautiful beaches, but also good sailing with the north-westerly ‘Meltemi’ winds felt all through the season. That said, along the southern ends of the islands you can readily find sheltered anchorages and calmer winds.

Our Base

Our base in the Sporades is on the island of Skiathos. Fligths to Skiathos are typically on a Friday, unless you wish to travel via Athens.

Weather and Winds

The summer months in the Sporades are dry and warm. Prevailing winds are from the north (sometimes NNW) providing fantastic sailing conditions. Do look out for the Meltemi, which can get up at times. Also look out for the ‘Sirrocco’, a southerly wind that blows every few weeks in early and late season.
