Sailing Marmaris, Gocek, Fethiye – the Carian and Lycian Coasts

The Lycian Coast stretches from Marmaris to Antalya in the SE and contains the sailing holiday bases of Marmaris, Gocek, and Fethiye. From Marmaris the Carian Coast is also accessible, extending west from Marmaris toward Bodrum.

Unlike many island-based sailing in the Mediterranean, a holiday in this southern area of the Aegean primarily involves cruising the many bays, gulfs and inlets of mainland Turkey. You’re not missing out on anything, as the unique geographical features of the coastline makes for brilliant sailing.

Surrounding the coast are massive mountain ranges dropping sheer into azure seas, carving the shore into a procession of tiny coves, hidden bays, and pristine beaches. Hillsides forming a vista from your yacht are covered in pine and olives trees and the ruins of countless ancient cities; Greek, Roman, and Byzantine cram the coast, limiting development to a few isolated areas. The incredible combination of historical sites and wonders, beautiful sailing and superb swimming that make this coastline a truly fantastic destination.

The Lycian Coast isn’t short of a nightspot either with the resorts of Hisaronu, Marmaris, Fethiye and Gocek all standing out with their array of bars and nightclubs. Come here to drink, dance and be merry!

If you prefer to take things a little slower then take your pick from a number of relaxed tavernas and restaurants up and down the coast, where you can enjoy the warm evenings out on the open air terrace. Add a local tipple and some good company and you have a perfect relaxing evening to your bareboat sailing holiday.

Weather and Winds

The climate of this region also contributes to the cruising excellence of this area with a season that stretches from April to October. June, July and August are of course the hottest months. May and September cooler and quieter and April and October still offering 8 to 9 hours of sunshine a day, with the opportunity for walking and exploring as well as cruising.

In summer the normal wind is the Meltemi that blows from the NW to WNW. In July and August it can get up to Force 6-7, which is keenly felt around the headlands and channels, such as off Karaburun and Deveboynu Burni. In these isolated areas the sea can also get up so it’s best to plan ahead if you wish to avoid the worst of it. In early and late summer the meltemi blows less strongly, and sometimes not at all for days on end.
