~ Naples and Amalfi Coast 14 Day Route Sailing the Amalfi Coast

Naples

Naples is located between two volcanic areas, the volcano Mount Vesuvius and the Phelgraean Fields, sitting on the coast by the Gulf of Naples. A city that’s rich in culture and history as well as being a prominent port in Southern Italy.

Procida

Of the many islands in the Gulf of Naples, Procida is an island about four square kilometres large and halfway between the point of the Phlegraean Fields and the island of Ischia, is the one which has best preserved its original genuine beauty, unpolluted nature and simplicity of life, together with its century-old traditions.

Ventotene

It was once the place where the Roman Emperors exiled roman matrons, although that has thankfully since changed. Ventotene is an important archaeological place, with its roman harbour dug into the tuff, the ancient fish basins and the ruins of "Villa Giulia" and last not but least the island is the remains of an ancient volcano.  The waters of Ventotene are also very clear, which make it perfect for diving and snorkelling.

Ponza

On arrival in Ponza you’ll be able to admire the semicircle of pink houses on the harbour, the roman "piscine", ancient basins where the Romans bred fishes and the small cemetery on the mountain.

The surrounding sea is the real jewel in the crown of Ponza, the sea comes alive with red seaweeds that wave in the current like the hair of a swimming "Medusa".  A great snorkelling experience with blue neon "castagnole", brightly coloured "donzelle", trusty king fishes and many small fishes with lovely colours all just a few metres below you.

Palmarola

Palmarola is just six miles far from Ponza. When arriving from Ponza at Palmarola, you’ll be able to see a wonderful bay, "Cala Brigantina" and on the left three great crags known as "Faraglioni di Mezzogiorno". On the North rock, you can see the ancient caves dug in the tuff, prehistoric shelters and the shelters of Ponza inhabitants, who came here to farm very small fields.

Zannone

Zannone Island is a delight for any budding geologists and part of the Circeo National Park, while an overnight stay and camping is prohibited, no special permit is needed to visit the island. But the real treasure of the island is its vegetation, it’s the same as when the first farmers found it many thousands of years ago. Here you can breathe in the perfume of rosemary, lavender, thyme, and heather. Zannone is a uninhabited island maintained by the Forestry Service which maintains a small exhibit on the tallest point of the island, Monte Pellegrino.

Ischia

Ischia is the largest island with her 47 square kilometres, the most beautiful and biggest island in the Gulf of Naples, Ischia is one of the most famous seaside and tourist centres of Italy in the world.

Today, the island of Ischia is a well-known tourist spot for four main reasons - unequalled natural beauty, all-year-round mild climate, thermal water and lastly for its modern tourist facilities. Everything from the sea to the mountain - including its harbours, the small bays, its convenient beaches and ports, the high rock face along its coast, the vegetation, the variety of the plant life, the pine trees and the myriads of multi-coloured flowers make Ischia one of the most beautiful islands.

Capri

Just off the coast of Naples and Salerno, between Cape Miseno and Amalfi, Capri soars a a great rock above the cobalt blue sea that surrounds it. This Mediterranean jewel, yearned for and exalted in some of the world's most famous lyric poetry, is the island of Capri. The intoxicating fragrance of flowers, delicate splashes of colour, recollections of a millennial past and a peaceful charm, shattered only by the shrill cry of seagulls, are just some of the magical qualities of this mythical island.

Amalfi

Breathtaking views, history, traditions, and modern comforts, are all represented in Amalfian life today, giving its visitors the chance to spend a relaxing, and exciting holiday at the same time. Amalfi origin dates back to the first century A.C. when the Roman aristocracy built luxurious villas in this area.

Today, Amalfi still maintains its fishing traditions, and has a number of fully functional, traditional, fishing boats. Amalfitans are also very proud of one of their most famous mariners, Flavio Gioia, the inventor of the compass. With its views, culture, food, and much more, Amalfi is surely able to surprise you!

Positano

Positano has been defined as a "vertical village", leaning against a rocky wall, full of charming multicoloured houses. The town of Positano is located in one of the most beautiful valleys of the Amalfi Coast, and the valley opens up to an equally magnificent stretch of coastline.

At the centre of town you can see the brightly coloured "majolica" Dome of Santa Maria Assunta, the main church of Positano. Positano has a very glamorous side to it, because of the famous "Positano fashion style", this is just one of the many reasons that tourists from all over the world flock to the pathways, and boutiques of Positano each summer.
