Sailing the Balearic Islands

The Balearics Islands are an autonomous Spanish Island group near the eastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula. The islands that form the group; Ibiza and Formentera, Menorca, Mallorca, and Cabrera are widely known for their land-based activities but are growing increasingly popular as a sailing holiday destination as sailors discover their perfect mix of sailing holiday ingredients.

Clear waters, sandy beaches, lively harbours and craggy landscape, the Balearics possess a special lifestyle, entertainment and cuisine as varied and exciting as sailing in the islands themselves.  Fly directly to our main base in Palma for a magical sailing holiday.

Mallorca

The main sailing destination of the region is also where we have our main base at Palma. Mallorca is a bustling island with spectacular scenery of contrast between the mountain and the sea. Palma is a destination for luxury yachts as well as smaller boats with its good nightlife and interesting architecture. The north is one long cliff of extraordinary beauty and the south is a patchwork of small towns and marinas.

Ibiza and Formentera

World-renowned destinations for the exciting nightlife during the high season. Quite a crowd descends on their spectacular beaches, which are some of the most beautiful in the world. However, if you visit in the summer, the beaches will be teaming with visitors looking for fun and reveling in the unique Bohemian ambience for which Ibiza and Formentera are renown. Out of season, these islands do offer peace and quiet in which to enjoy the lovely landscapes that abound.

Menorca

This tranquil island is a good place to go to escape the crowds, as it is the least populated. Menorca offers some of the most beautiful and unspoiled anchorages in the region and is characterized by its numerous remote coves. You will not want to miss Ciutadella on the west coast of Menorca with its picturesque harbor.

Cabrera

Only three by four miles, Cabrera is rich in history and wildlife. As a national park, one must obtain permission to visit. Only 50 boats are allowed in the harbor. Plan ahead and contact the ICONA (Instituto Nacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza) in Palma. If you are lucky enough to get to visit don’t forget to bring food and drinks. There is only a single small canteen on the island.

Wind and Sailing Conditions

In the western cruising area, southeast winds generally prevail in the summer months. In the eastern cruising area, including Menorca, winds are generally from the north and northwest throughout the year. East Mallorca to Menorca winds are northwest and Ibiza to West Mallorca, east to southeast winds are common from 5 to 15 knots. The area enjoys a dry, mild climate year-round with some rain in April.
